Michael composed musical scores for productions of over 30 plays including new works and new productions of classic works. That music is as much a part of his legacy as the original musicals that can be licensed and produced. We hope that his incidental music can live on in new forms and new productions, so we’re providing access to it free of charge for theater companies and theater makers without the resources to create and record new scores for their productions. Please credit Michael along with your other creative team members. And beyond that, please enjoy!

“The Civilians began in 2001 with a company of artists, led by Founding Artistic Director Steve Cosson, who were interested in making new work at the intersection of the theatrical and the real. We took our name from old vaudeville slang — a “civilian” being anyone outside of show business — and we coined the term “investigative theater” to describe our combination of a creative process with field research and in-depth residencies with specific communities.”
In 2019, The Civilians and Ghostlight Records launched The Michael Friedman Collection, releasing The Great Immensity, The Abominables, and This Beautiful City. In 2020, (I Am) Nobody’s Lunch and Paris Commune were released.
